Matt Reed Marathon

In April 2023, Reed ran for the “Miles for Miracles” team to raise money and say thank you for the life-saving work the staff at Boston Children’s Hospital do every day. Reed, a first-time marathon runner said: “It’s funny, before getting into this, I would roll my eyes when someone would say, ‘Oh, I am running a marathon’ and that’s all they talked about. I now get it because you almost have to do that. It’s so consuming.”

With Reed’s busy work schedule, he had to find time to train for the 26.2-mile race.

“There’s a lot of caffeine every day, and there have been times when it was like, ‘Was this the right time in life to do it?’ But really, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Reed said. “I said I wanted to do it once, and the opportunity arose. You know they say there’s no good time to have a kid? There’s probably no good time to run a marathon. And there’s been many times I thought that. I’ll sleep after April 17.”

He also added that the training was not easy.

“The hardest part, I think, has been the consistency. There are no breaks, especially with my injury. Most training programs are 20 or 18 weeks and we’ve had to cram that all into a six-week program as far as the running,” Reed said.

When Reed suffered an inflamed tendon in his foot, he said he did consider quitting.

“I think it was more of the fact I was unsure if I could do it and didn’t want to let the team down,” Reed said.

“It’s been really great for me to get into running, not just the physical part but the mental. We have a stressful job, we’re both parents and the stresses that come from parenthood and it’s been really great to not only feel better physically but feel better up here,” he added.
