Bradley was sexually assaulted when she was 23 years old. She shared her story of sexual assault in 2017 during a news broadcast. During the segment, Bradley explained that she had been inspired to share her story after seeing the #MeToo movement on social media. Women who have lived with sexual assault or sexual harassment shared the words “Me Too” in posts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, sometimes sharing anecdotes or their own stories.
Bradley then said that nine years ago, she was drugged and raped by composer and filmmaker Joseph Brooks.
“Day in and day out, you welcome me into your hearts and homes,” Bradley said. “So I’m taking this time to let you into my heart, with the hopes of helping just one person. It’s not going to be easy for me to say, and could be hard for you to hear — and you may not want your children present for this.”
Brooks was best known as the composer of songs including “If I Ever See You Again” and “You Light Up My Life,” and for directing films of the same names. He was arrested for more than 91 charges of rape and sexual assault and committed suicide before the case could go to trial.
Brooks’ assistant, Shawni Lucier, admitted to helping arrange for Brooks to assault at least 10 women by helping to lure them to his Manhattan apartment, under the pretense of auditions for film roles.
Bradley, then 23, shared that she wore her grandmother’s dress. “It was knee-length, it was floral, it was classy,” Bradley said of the dress. “I figured it would bring me good luck,” she said, adding that she felt Lucier’s friendly, comforting presence and Brooks’ fame ensured that this would be a legitimate audition. However, after accepting a drink from Brooks that had been drugged, Bradley blacked out and woke to find that she had been raped and that her driver’s license and credit cards had been taken.
When another woman came forward with claims against Brooks, Bradley also came forward to testify. However, Brooks’ suicide and Lucier’s plea bargain brought her no closure.
