Hunter, who had been in custody for 19 months before his release in July 2023, told the Cypriot court his wife “cried and begged” him to end her life as she suffered from blood cancer. The court also heard that Hunter had also tried to kill himself by taking an overdose, but medics arrived in time to save him.
In mitigation, his defense lawyer, Ritsa Pekri, said his motive was to “liberate his wife from all that she was going through due to her health conditions”.
Speaking outside the court, Hunter said: “I would like to say thank you to all the people who donated to me and especially my mates, my workmates, I don’t know where I’d be without them.
“I can’t describe [how I am feeling]. I wish I could find words to describe it but I can’t.
“When you’re under that pressure for two years, wondering which way it was going to go, you don’t know,” he said.

David had been married to Janice Hunter for 52 years before she died in December 2021 at the age of 74. Janice died of asphyxiation at the couple’s retirement home near Paphos. Her husband admitted to killing her but denied murder. He told a Cyprus court that Janice had blood cancer and “begged him” to take her life because she was in so much pain.
