Rosie first messaged Caleb when he was 17 in 2016 to reassure him over a Twitter pile-on after a column he’d written.

“He thanked me but said he really didn’t care about it. For a couple of years, we had friendly sparring interactions online. I’d tease him for his pro-monarchy stance, silly stuff like, “Bow down to your colonial master.” We grew this unlikely online friendship. The content creator in me thought, “There’s a podcast here.” I visited Adelaide from Sydney for work in 2019 and Caleb agreed to meet to discuss it and see if the chemistry translated from typing to talking,” Rosie explained.

“He was 20 by then and the skinny teenager from his byline picture was gone. He’d grown a beard, filled it out, and had a glow-up. The banter translated and we’ve been a couple ever since. We’re an odd couple. We dress so differently. He wears a shirt, cuff links, tie, suit, and tweed blazer with a pocket square. I wear T-shirts. Caleb doesn’t own one; he says they’re undignified. I teach him about reality TV; he teaches me about stamp duty. I admire how he’s just so unapologetically himself, especially for 24. I’m unsure of myself and a people pleaser, but Caleb won’t tone down his opinion even if he wants you to like him,” Rosie added.

In March 2020, Caleb drove from Adelaide to Sydney to visit Rosie. As soon as he’d driven over the border, it was closed because of COVID: Caleb had no option but to move in with her and that’s when Rosie and Caleb started living together.

Rosie had a difficult childhood of abuse and neglect. Her parents were alcoholics and she lived in more than 100 houses, including foster homes.
